Awareness Program on PTSD and Drug Abuse

On June 27, 2023, the department conducted an essential awareness session focused on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Drug Abuse. The event was officially inaugurated by Dr.Munawar Jasim (Principal, Grace Valley College of Arts and Science). Student presenters provided detailed insights into the direct and indirect mechanisms through which PTSD affects patients, while also explaining the role of dopamine and learned preferences in addictive behavior. To visually represent the gravity of these issues, the program featured a powerful mime performance.

 

World Mental Health Day: Community Outreach at Shanthi Bhavan

In observance of World Mental Health Awareness Day, a delegation of 45 students conducted a field visit to Shanthi Bhavan (Children's Home) on October 8, 2023. The primary objective of this visit was to extend psychological support and create awareness regarding mental well-being among young residents. Through interactive sessions and engaging activities, students provided children with practical tools to cope with psychological challenges, fostering an atmosphere of joy and community camaraderie.

 

Clinical Exposure: Visit to Louis Mount Hospital, Wayanad

To provide students with a direct understanding of mental health institutions, a clinical visit to Louis Mount Hospital was organized on November 4, 2023. Students interacted with Dr. Linjo (Chief Clinical Psychologist), who introduced basics of psychiatric illness and therapeutic modalities such as CBT and ECT, and Mr. Anwin (Psychologist), who detailed the hospital’s specialized rehabilitation and inpatient services. This industrial visit allowed students to observe the functioning of a 140-bed multidisciplinary mental health team in a professional setting.

 

EMOSENSE-ONE WEEK PROGRAMME

Inauguration of "CALM" Psychology Club & Logo Launch

The department officially launched its dedicated Psychology Club, "CALM," on December 4, 2023. The inauguration and logo reveal were performed by Ms. Fathima Rini (Clinical Psychologist), who also delivered a specialized guest session on Psychological First Aid (PFA). The session highlighted critical aspects of immediate emotional support, psychological state assessment, and effective referral systems, emphasizing the club's role as a platform for networking and scientific awareness within the campus.

Extension Activity: Working Memory Assessment

On December 5, 2023, the department extended its services to the community by organizing a Psychological Assessment program at MKHMALP School, Maravattam. Participating students conducted comprehensive Working Memory Inventories among 4th-standard students. Following the assessment, a detailed professional report was submitted to the Headmaster of the school, demonstrating the department's commitment to social responsibility and practical academic application.

Exhibition on Criminal Behavior and Parapsychology

A major highlight of the year was the two-day exhibition, held on December 6–7, 2023, and inaugurated by Manager Faisal Wafy. The event explored complex themes such as criminal psychology and parapsychology, featuring a mock crime room, studies on serial killers, and demonstrations of pseudo-psychology. A specific model of a Ouija board was utilized to educate over 300 participants on common myths and misconceptions regarding evil spirits and black magic.

Film Festival: Cinematic Exploration of Psychology

As part of the Emosense week, the "Film Festival" was held on December 8, 2023. Over 90 students gathered to watch the psychological thriller "Split," followed by a stimulating academic discussion on human emotions and behavioral complexities. The festival successfully used cinema as a medium to foster a deeper, more accessible understanding of intricate psychological concepts.

 

Specialized Certificate Course: Management of Learning Disabilities

The department successfully continued its certificate program, "Management of Learning Disabilities," for the 2023-24 academic year. Enrolled students received intensive theory and practical training from eminent resource persons currently working in clinical and industrial settings. This course provides specialized knowledge beyond the standard curriculum, preparing students for professional roles in remedial education and clinical support.
